Frequently asked questions

  • Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy, is a way to help people with a broad variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing.

  • Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) is an empirically supported model that gives patients corrective emotional and relational experiences that mobilize changes in the brain. AEDP is transdiagnostic, i.e., it can effectively treat trauma, depression, emotion dysregulation, negative thoughts, experiential avoidance, and interpersonal problems. AEDP establishes a therapeutic relationship of safety and trust, and enhances positive functioning such as self-compassion, well-being, and self-esteem in both therapist and client. Dr. Fosha’s synthesis of theory, research, and clinical practice termed AEDP, has become widely recognized as an important step forward in psychotherapeutic treatment.

  • Nervous about the first visit? No worries! Most people are. The first session allows us to meet and get to know each other. We’ll explore what areas of your life you are looking to work on and discuss how to best support you. You get to ask questions too!

  • If you have to cancel, we ask that you honor our time commitment and other fellow clients, by canceling no less than 48hrs before the session. That gives other fellow clients the opportunity to take your time slot. Once you cancel, you can reschedule the session at your earliest convenience through your client portal. We ask that you try to schedule on a date that is close to your canceled session so that we may keep regularity in the process going. Thanks in advance and we’re always looking forward to reconnecting with you.

  • In the first session we discuss the 'process' in a way that you can understand it, while co-creating a safe and comfortable space for you to talk about anything you'd like to bring up. This is a judgment-free zone where you get to be you and I get to be me. We’ll explore what your goals are and how we'll get there. Mostly using CBT, AEDP, DBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and Mindfulness, you’ll learn skills that help you deal with the waves that sometimes occur in life.

  • We are actively engaged in conversation with you. We are present with you. This helps us explore the problems you’ve experienced, heart to heart. This is a wonderful opportunity for healing that requires both the therapist's and the client’s engagement.

  • In groups, we develop communication skills, understand ourselves in relation to others, and it is a safe place to build community. All group members are carefully selected prior to entering the group.

  • If you think we may be a good fit for you but live outside of the city, or you are unable to get to the appointment, telehealth is a great solution that provides privacy and convenience for people. We can speak on a protected health site virtually in real-time.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy also known as CBT is a highly practical and effective intervention for people with various problems. This type of therapy helps to identify and address the behaviors and thinking patterns that cause and maintain an underlying problem. Numerous studies show that CBT is just as effective as medication, 75% of people experience a decrease in symptoms, within two years post therapy (Leahy & Holland, 2001).

  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a modified type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Its main goals are to teach people how to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, regulate their emotions, and improve their relationships with others. DBT was originally intended to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD), but it has been adapted to treat other mental health conditions beyond BPD. It can help people who have difficulty with emotional regulation or are exhibiting self-destructive behaviors (such as eating disorders and substance use disorders). This type of therapy is also sometimes used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
